Derivation and Real-World Use of DQ Current and Voltage Loop Control for Motor Drives

February 22, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm PST

Tony O’Gorman, President, PESC Inc.

Abstract

The DQ method of controlling AC voltages and currents is well established in the power electronics industry. However, the derivation and the issues related to use are not understood as well. This talk will focus on the derivation and application of the DQ equivalent circuit which is widely used for the control of permanent magnet motors and induction motors. The issues which arise from the use of the DQ method will be illustrated using simulation.

Agenda

 – DC/DC converter current and voltage loops

– DC/AC inverter current and voltage loops

– What is DQ loop control

– How it is derived from AC circuit

– Issues to be aware of with DQ loop control

– Applications of DQ control: Permanent Magnet Motor, Induction Motor

Biography

Tony received a BSEE degree from University College Cork, Ireland (1984) and a PhD from University of Minnesota (1994). He has extensive experience in digital control of power electronics for dc/dc converters and DQ control of three-phase inverters, for commercial and automotive applications. He has worked on hybrid vehicles for bus and passenger car applications for the last 25 years. Presently, he is the principal in a consulting company which focuses on control and power electronics.
